Integrated Ship Design Laboratory (ISD Lab)
Description of the research group
The Integrated Ship Design Laboratory (ISD Lab) was established in early 2017. The laboratory aims to innovate the ship design process as well as to research about new types of ships. The main objective of ISD Lab is to go beyond the design “system by system”, approaching the ship in a holistic manner.
The ship is a complex set where all subsystems may be arranged in many different feasible layouts always in accordance with the various requirements, constraints, and interconnections. By means of this innovative approach, it is possible to attain the best possible ship, capable to guarantee both the best economic and operative performances. This is the challenge of ISD Lab along with increasing ships’ safety and lowering the environmental impact of vessels. To face up to these topics ISD Lab created a multidisciplinary team capable to use the most advanced tools for ship design as well as developing in-house build software.
