Since the beginning of industrialization, large clusters of manufacturers and suppliers have grown in Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Germany, and in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy.

In 2011, the University of Trieste and the OWL University of Applied Sciences have introduced an international double-degree Master course in “Production Engineering and Management”.

The “International Conference on Production Engineering and Management” has been embedded in the Master program from the very beginning and it was carried out for the first time in June 2011. In the last sixth edition, the topic ‘Direct Digital Manufacturing’ was added alongside ’Product Life-Cycle Assessment’, ‘Lean Manufacturing’, ‘Supply Chain Management’ and ‘Wood Processing Technologies’.

All these topics are strictly related to the goal of cleaner production by using renewable material and energy, reducing the consumption of primary resources, eliminating pollutant emissions and recycling waste. Accordingly, the additional topic ‘Sustainable Production’ has been explicitly introduced in this seventh edition of the Conference.
